Are heaven and hell places?

Heaven and hell are not places. They are experiences of being face to face with God - the one who is love, who loves you unceasingly and unconditionally. It is like staring into the eyes of an innocent lamb, after you have spent your entire life lying to it, abusing it, neglecting it, and persecuting it - yet it forgives you and still loves you and still wants you unconditionally. How will that be for us? If we are prepared for that, it is heaven. If we can't stand its pure gaze, it will be utter torment. That is the Orthodox understanding of heaven and hell.

People often think 'getting into heaven' is some sort of golden ticket. God does not operate on a transactional system, whereby you get x if you do y. The question, "what do I need to do to get to heaven?" is an absurdity in the authentic Christian worldview.

We believe that when we die, we are raised up again. Everyone is. The entire world. God forgives everyone for everything. How we experience God’s love will be heaven or hell for us. So, heaven is not a place, as such. It is a reaction to seeing God, face to face, being in his total presence, in our restored world, at the end of the ages.
